Hal Blank (Director) – Senior Therapist
Masters in Sports Physiotherapy, Post Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Credentialed in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy.
Hal completed his Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Otago in 2001. He has since worked in busy Sports Medicine clinics in Christchurch, in England and in Melbourne before bringing his wealth of experience back to Whangarei at the end of 2015.
Hal has a passion for Sports Physiotherapy and exercise rehabilitation and he enjoys working with active people of all levels. Whilst living in Melbourne Hal completed his Master’s Degree in Sports Physiotherapy and was fortunate to spend time working with the Gold Coast Suns AFL team as well as Tennis Australia, treating some of Australia’s best Tennis and AFL players. He has been proud to be the physio for Kamo Seniors Rugby since 2016.
Hal has also worked with elite Rugby Union and Basketball teams and with many elite athletes as a Sports Physiotherapist in New Zealand, England and Australia. In recognition of his expertise in Sports Physiotherapy in Australia Hal was awarded the title 'APA Sports Physiotherapist' in 2014.
Hal has always enjoyed treating neck and back injuries and in 2009 Hal passed the McKenzie Institute credentialing examination. He believes the McKenzie method is empowering to patients as it provides exercises to reduce pain as well as maintain healthy spinal function.
In his spare time Hal enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He keeps active with Weight Training, Tennis and Diving and enjoying the great outdoor lifestyle that Northland has to offer.
Wendy is the preferred provider to the High Performance Sport NZ, she provides treatment and full muscle balance assessments to elite carded athletes. Wendy has been physio to Northland Hockey and continues to provide treatment and advice to Northlands up and coming athletes.
The increasing focus for elite athletes and particularly for junior developing athletes is on pre-screening via muscle balance assessment and movement competency screening after which an individualised programme is prescribed to improve performance or reduce injury risk. Wendy Langlands is also our trained Clinical Pilates Provider. Wendy takes private Pilates sessions as well as small group clinical Pilates groups at Kensington Gym. These sessions can be the perfect way to continue to maintain your body in addition to or on completion of your physiotherapy programme.
Wendy also provides rehabilitation programmes integrating a Clinical Pilates and rehabilitation approach at Kensington gym. Being a post graduate trained therapist Wendy treats all spinal and general musculoskeletal problems.
Julie Taylor - Senior Manipulative Therapist, REG. Hand Therapist, MNZSP, BHSc Physio, PGDip Musculo and MHPrac with distinction.
Throughout Julie's career she has placed a strong emphasis on continuing education to further her knowledge in Musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Most recently she gained a Masters of Health Practice to add to her other qualifications. She has also written and had published an article in a recent in a physiotherapy journal.
Throughout Julie's postgraduate & Masters study she has achieved straight A's in addition to the NZMPA award for excellence in clinical reasoning & practical skills.
Julie is also a keen hockey & tennis player herself, who recognises the importance of managing acute sporting injuries in a timely & efficient manner, in order to ensure a safe return to sport as soon as possible. Jane Sweeney (Senior Hand Therapist)
Reg. Hand Therapist, MNZAHT
Jane is our Senior Hand Therapist and also works as Senior Therapist at Whangarei Base Hospital. Jane provides comprehensive assessments and treatment of all hand therapy conditions and custom makes any splinting required. Currently ACC Hand therapy is fully funded under a separate hand therapy contract.
Dip Physio, Registered Hand Therapist (HTNZ)
Rachel grew up in Whangarei and returned to work at Whangarei hospital for a brief time after graduating with a diploma of Physiotherapy from ATI in 1987. Rachel spent her early career in DHB-based orthopaedics both in New Zealand and England. Rachel’s Hand Therapy specialisation commenced at Middlemore hospital in 1992, and she was one of the first NZ Hand Therapists to gain registration in 2001. She has worked in a voluntary role as secretary and newsletter editor for Hand Therapy New Zealand.
Rachel is passionate about hand therapy with a keen interest in acute care. She particularly enjoys the art and problem solving required for custom splint making, having spent 2 years in an educator role running splinting workshops.
Rachel set up her successful hand therapy private practice, Moving Hands in Drury in 2005. She sold this in 2018 for a change of lifestyle, moving back to her home town now her family has grown up.
Outside of work Rachel enjoys pilates, tramping, travel and walking her dog.
BHsc Physio, P.G.Dip, MSK
Gemma has worked at both our clinics. She is currently on maternity leave. Gemma returns to Kamo in February 2019 to provide excellent manual therapy diagnosis and treatment.
Jane is a long standing member of our team. Jane has had a busy year juggling her two young daughters and lifestyle block. We have enjoyed her return to the clinic with her post graduate manual therapy experience and acupuncture skills. Jane works part time and appointments with her need to be booked in advance.
As a member of the Physiotherapy Acupuncture Association of New Zealand Jane has continued her training in acupuncture and Jane's patients have dual access to both physio treatments and acupuncture.
Rachel has 14 years of physiotherapy experience in Private practice and has had a worked in Rehabilitation over the last 6 years. She enjoys post -surgery rehab and is skilled in rehab of complex conditions with her care returning people back to full function safely. She develops great rapport with her clients and is helpful and informative in communicating progress and plans.
In addition Rachel has postgraduate qualifications in Manipulative therapy as well as Acupuncture qualifications. Rachel can offer you exceptional diagnostic skills as well as highly effective manual therapy treatment. If you choose you may also benefit from acupuncture as an adjunct to your treatment.
Working together with Hal Blank and Brett Crossan they provide comprehensive rehabilitation programmes at the gym.
Rachel and the team passionate about, and gain great personal satisfaction from providing rehabilitation services at the fully equipped and serviced Kensington Fitness Centre.
Brett Crossan - BHsc Physio, BPhEd
Brett hails from the South Island where he initially completed a Bachelor of Physical Education at notorious Otago Uni.
He then went on to complete his Bachelor of Health (Physiotherapy) in Auckland.
Brett managed to squeeze in a trip to Canada to chase some snow before starting with us.
He has a very active background in outdoor sports kayaking, abseiling as well as boarding.
However his great sporting asset is his passion for rugby. He has played for the Dunedin Sharks, Mid Northern and is this year player / Physio for Kamo alongside Hal Blank (local legend).
Brett will be working out of both our Kamo and Gym clinic providing hands on treatments as well as individually tailored gym based rehab programmes.
Clients will appreciate his thoroughness as much as his personality.
